Delys Gebert still remembers when the first
Mandurah population sign was put up on Pinjarra Road in the 1970s.
“It said Mandurah had a population of 2354
and I was amazed even back then at how much it had grown,” she said.
“Not only has Mandurah’s population grown
so much, the demographic has also changed quite dramatically.”
The new Peel Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (PCCI) manager, Delys has lived in the Peel Region since she was seven
years old.
She has worked in a variety of industries –
from apple picking in Dwellingup to working in the hospitality industry,
studying accounting and adult education, she has been self employment and owned
a hotel in country WA.
The first thing Delys did when she started at
PCCI was to learn more about the role of the Chamber and the business
community.
“Each day is never the same and varies
depending on what takes priority, one day it could be organising functions, the
next updating the bulletin or working on our quarterly Business Lifestyle
Tourism (BLT) magazine,” she said.
Delys added the most important part of her
job was meeting members and providing the services that meets their needs.
“Members stated that it is important to get
together in a social and relaxed environment at the Business After Hours function
to network and support each other.”
Business After Hours functions are held
bimonthly, hosted by a member.
“This gives other members the chance to see the host
business in more detail.”
Currently the PCCI has about 340 members and
Delys wants this number to increase to 900 within two years.
The
region has seen a positive change in the business community therefore the Peel Chamber of Commerce and Industry will support
business in this time of high growth.
The Chamber
is developing and establishing programs for the Corporate and Gold card
members. These programs are designed to
assist businesses to grow and attack work from outside the Peel Region. It is a different echelon and requires a different
kind of thinking to operate in this market place. Some times the business person needs support
from people in the same situation and
opportunity to talk to another person who is able to provide a sounding board opportunity reflecting ideas
and concepts. This services provided by
the Chamber will work toward achieving exactly that.
